Welcome to Totten Key…

Totten Key and Its Opportunity for an Early Pioneer

Totten Key is an island in the Florida Keys that lies in Biscayne National Park. Old Rhodes Key lies just to the east of it. Totten Key is in close proximity to several other islands that are in the Caesar’s Creek vicinity including Adams Key, Rubicon Keys, Porgy Key, Reid Key, and Old Rhodes Key. The island doesn’t get many visitors today but it was a land of opportunity for an early pioneer named Israel Jones.

The Environment of Totten Key

It is reported that Totten Key has dense mangroves that hide the land which is probably one of the reasons why not many visit it. It has no seafront so there are no trade winds to help control mosquitoes and gnats. As part of the Biscayne National Park, it is a protected island. The park protects the natural environment and the extensive network of undersea coral reefs that over the ages built up to form the foundations of the islands we see today.

Things to Do around this Island

There are no facilities on the island. Visitors usually come to Totten Key by private boat and go fishing, diving, or snorkeling. Close by is Adams Key which does have facilities such as a toilet, picnic pavilions, and a dock. Adams Key is a day use only island. It is reported that because of Caesar’s Creek, navigation around this and nearby islands can be quite challenging.
